Thomas Bals

Thomas Bals (born April 10, 1957 in Recklinghausen ) is a German professional and business educator and graduate psychologist.

biography

After completing the general university entrance qualification at the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium Hamm in 1975, Bals first completed an apprenticeship as a financial candidate at the tax office in Hamm. He then completed a degree in teaching for the upper secondary level / vocational specialization in economics and special education and rehabilitation for the learning disabled as well as a degree in psychology at the University of Cologne . After passing the first state examination, he was initially a research assistant at the local institute for vocational, economic and social education and a part-time teacher at a technical school.

From 1985 to 1989 Bals worked as a research assistant in the field of vocational and business education at the University of Osnabrück . In 1989 he received his doctorate in the field of education and cultural studies at the University of Osnabrück on the subject of "Professionalization of teaching in the occupational field of health". Until his habilitation in 1995 for the subject of vocational and business education with the title "Vocational training for health professions: Classification - structural change - reform approaches", he worked as an academic councilor and senior academic councilor at the University of Osnabrück. In 1998, Bals was awarded the title of "Extraordinary Professor" by the President of the University of Osnabrück.

In 2002, Bals received a call to the C2 university professorship "Medical and Nursing Education / Vocational Didactics" in the Faculty of Education at the Technical University of Dresden . Since 2009 he has held the W3 professorship in “ Vocational Education ” in the Faculty of Culture and Education at the University of Osnabrück. From 2011 to 2015 he headed the Institute for Educational Science here. Since April 2015 Bals has been dean of the Faculty of Education and Cultural Studies at the University of Osnabrück.

From April to September 2012 Bals was a visiting scholar at the Blinken European Institute at Columbia University in New York.

Main focus of work and research

Thomas Bals is concerned with the further development of vocational training as part of the education and employment system. Of particular research interest are questions of educational professionalism and professionalization in various institutional contexts as well as the promotion of permeability between academic and vocational education.

His research focus is design and development oriented u. a. including systematic, quality-assuring and (international) comparative procedures.
