Thomas Benton Slate (born December 2, 1880 in Tangent , Linn County , Oregon ; died November 26, 1980 in Corvallis , Oregon) was an American inventor and entrepreneur. He founded the company DryIce on the east coast and produced dry ice commercially . He sold it and founded the Slate Aircraft Company to build airships in 1925 , built an airship hangar on the south side of Glendale Airport , Glendale , California, and built an all-metal civilian airship with an outer shell of duralumin . The hydrogen-filled "City of Glendale" was 212 feet long. The cabin was 80 feet long and comfortable for the passengers. The airship broke during the first rollout on December 19, 1929 because a pressure relief valve had failed. A continuation of the work was no longer possible due to the global economic crisis .
