Thomas Birkmann

Thomas Birkmann (born October 18, 1955 in Düsseldorf ) is a German German and Scandinavian medievalist , linguist and runologist . He teaches as an adjunct professor at the Scandinavian seminar at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .

Birkmann studied mathematics, chemistry and German for teaching at the Technical University of Karlsruhe from 1974 to 1976 and German and geography from 1976 to 1980 in Freiburg. In 1986 he did his doctorate in Freiburg with Otmar Werner with the thesis Preteritopresentia - morphological developments in the old Germanic languages in the subjects Scandinavian linguistics as a major and in older German literature and linguistic history as well as in general linguistics as a minor. In 1993, in Freiburg, he also did his habilitation with Otmar Werner with a runological thesis From Ågedal to Malt. The Scandinavian runic inscriptions from the end of the 5th to the end of the 9th century in the subjects of Germanic and North Germanic philology.

In addition to substitute professorships and lectureships, including in Greifswald and Posen, Birkmann has been teaching Scandinavian linguistics in Freiburg, succeeding Damaris Nübling, since 2000. Birkmann's research focus is Germanic and North Germanic philology.
