Thomas J. Bopp (born October 15, 1949 in Denver , Colorado , † January 5, 2018 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American amateur astronomer .

After graduating from high school in 1967 and several years of military service with the US Air Force in the Philippines and Tucson , Bopp studied economics at Youngstown State University . From 1980 he worked as a manager near Phoenix .

On July 23, 1995, Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp discovered the comet Hale-Bopp independently of one another .

The asteroid (7086) Bopp , discovered on October 5, 1991, was named after him and his father Frank Bopp in 1997. He was married and had a daughter.
