Thomas Clayton Davis

Thomas Clayton Davis (born September 6, 1889 in Prince Albert , † January 21, 1960 in Victoria ) was a Canadian engineer, officer and diplomat .

Life

Thomas Clayton Davis came from an Irish family who settled south of Sherbrooke, Quebec. His grandfather organized John Macdonald's election campaign . His father moved from Quebec to Prince Albert, where he and a brother opened a trading house.

In 1909, Thomas Davis was admitted to the Osgoode Hall bar. He practiced in Prince Albert with his partner Frank Halliday as a lawyer.

In February 1926 he appointed officers for communal affairs. In December 1927 he became attorney general . In the provincial elections in Prince Albert in 1929 he was the competitor in second place Davis John Diefenbaker by a few votes. After a legislative period, he returned to the legal profession.

In 1934 Thomas Clayton Davis, Prime Minister James Garfield Gardiner was appointed Attorney General. Davis was a gifted politician. He had a remarkable memory of the names and personal information of his constituents.

In June 1939, Davis was appointed to the appeals court. His time on the Court of Appeal was short. In 1940 Prime Minister Mackenzie King named him Deputy Secretary of War. From 1942 he was in the foreign service, first as high commissioner in Australia , then as envoy to China , West Germany and Japan .
