Thomas Eder (Benedictine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Eder OSB (* unknown; probably in Millstatt ; † May 3, 1606 in Sankt Paul im Lavanttal ) was an Austrian Benedictine who was abbot of St. Lambrecht's Abbey from 1591 to 1596 . Since Thomas Berner, an abbot with the religious name Thomas, was already in office around 50 years before , Eder has often been written as Thomas II since then .

Life

Thomas Eder is said to come from a noble Millstatt family, which means that he was also born in Millstatt. On June 10, 1591 he was elected abbot of the Upper Styrian Benedictine Abbey of St. Lambrecht. He succeeded Johann Trattner , who died in the same year after almost 30 years in office. After his election as abbot, it took almost a year before he was confirmed by Pope Clement VIII in May 1592 . In the same year he had invited Christoph Andreas von Spaur , then Bishop of Gurk , to the benediction, but never received his benediction due to various difficulties. Due to the difficulties mentioned, which were mainly due to the lack of staff and the burden of debt, Eder wore down and left him resigned after five years in office. After he had retired as abbot of St. Lambrecht, Eder moved to his confrere Vinzenz Lechner , the then abbot of St. Paul Abbey , in Sankt Paul im Lavanttal , where he also died on May 3, 1606.

Since the nine voters could not agree on a candidate after his resignation, their former confrere and at that time Abbot of Admont, Johann Hoffmann , took over the administration of St. Lambrecht. Since he carried out the administration more for his own benefit and disadvantaged the abbey, Hoffmann was replaced again in June 1597 by the Commendatar Abbot Christoph Kirmeser . Kirmeser remained in office for only one year before the capitulars found a worthy successor in Martin Alopitius, who is famous for his “erudition and good economy” .
