Thomas Fehling (born November 30, 1967 in Bad Hersfeld ) is a German politician ( non-party , formerly FDP ).

Career

After graduating from high school in Bad Hersfeld, Fehling first studied electrical engineering and then business informatics at the TU Darmstadt . He then worked for various companies including Sybase , NCR Corporation and Teradata .

In 1996 he joined the FDP. In 2004 he was elected district chairman of the FDP Hersfeld-Rotenburg and the following year he ran unsuccessfully for the German Bundestag . In 2006, Fehling became a member of the Bad Hersfeld city council and the district council of the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district . In 2007 he ran for the office of mayor of Bad Hersfeld and in 2009 in the constituency 169 Werra-Meißner - Hersfeld-Rotenburg again for the Bundestag.

After the incumbent Hartmut Henning Boehmer resigned in 2010 , a new election as mayor of Bad Hersfeld had to be carried out. Fehling ran again and received the second most votes in the first ballot with 30.9 percent out of five applicants. In the runoff election two weeks later, he prevailed with 50.7 percent. Fehling took up the office of mayor in January 2011. At the time of his election, Fehling was the eleventh full-time mayor of the FDP in Hesse. Fehling has been non-party since 2014.

In the mayoral election on September 11, 2016, Fehling prevailed against his two competitors with a result of 52.2 percent in the first ballot and thus remains mayor of Bad Hersfeld.

In his function as mayor of the city of Hersfeld, he is also chairman of the supervisory board of Vitalisklinik Bad Hersfeld GmbH (clinic for digestive and metabolic diseases) and deputy chairman of the board of directors of Sparkasse Bad Hersfeld-Rotenburg.

Political positions

In January 2016, a post was discussed on his private Facebook page, where he commented on the sexual assault on New Year's Eve in Cologne : "Apparently some of the refugees are in full bloom and are bursting with excess energy [...] Why are these ' Quitters' into our country and trample our culture instead of fighting for their country and their families at home.
