The 2017 Bundestag election will take place on Sunday, September 24, 2017. In Hessen , 20 parties applied with their state list. The Alliance of German Democrats withdrew their application. The violet one was rejected by the state election committee because the required two thousand signatures for support were not presented. Thus 18 parties apply with their state lists in Hesse. A total of 353 applicants are running on the state lists, less than a third (114) of them women.

For the 2002 elections lost Nordhessen a constituency. From areas of the two constituencies Hersfeld and Werra-Meißner , which were dissolved in this context , a new constituency was set up with the name Werra-Meißner - Hersfeld , whose name was changed to Werra-Meißner - Hersfeld-Rotenburg for the 2005 federal election .
