Thomas Hjalmar Maloney Westgård (born October 10, 1995 in Leka ) is an Irish , formerly Norwegian cross-country skier who competed for Norway until 2016 and has started for Ireland since 2016 .

Career

Born and raised in Leka, Norway as the son of a Norwegian and an Irish woman, Westgård competed in the Nordic Scandinavian Cup for the first time in Östersund in January 2016 . There he finished 101st place in the 15 km freestyle, 93rd place in the sprint and 72nd place in the 15 km mass start race. He made his debut in the Cross-Country World Cup at the beginning of the 2016/17 season on the mini tour in Lillehammer , which he finished in 76th place. In the further course of the season four races in the World Cup followed. His best result was 44th place in the 50 km mass start race in Oslo . At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , he came in 77th place in sprint, 58th place in skiathlon and 49th place over 15 km classic. The following year he ran at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang on 63rd place over 15 km freestyle, 62nd place in sprint and 60th place in skiathlon. His best placings at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld in Tirol were 35th place over 15 km classic and 27th place together with Jan Rossiter in the team sprint. In March 2019, he scored his first World Cup points in Oslo with 22nd place in the 50 km mass start race.
