Thomas Karsten (2013)

Thomas Karsten (* 1958 in Eisenach ) is a German photographer .

Life

Karsten grew up in Leipzig. After working in other artistic fields, at the age of 21 he felt called to photography. In 1982 he left the GDR and worked as a freelance photographer and assistant to Stefan Moses in Munich.

Since 1983 he has worked for magazines such as Stern, Art, Eltern, Nerve (New York), Capital. His first individual publication received the Kodak Photo Book Prize in 1988. Thomas Karsten became internationally known for his more than 20 photo books, the result of his work on various subjects in nude photography. His nude photographs can be found in international publications such as New Erotic Photography (Los Angeles), Deep Inside (Lausanne), Masterpieces of Erotic Photography (London), Nerve (San Francisco), BilderLust (Heideberg), Nudi (Milan), Erotic Photography ( London), Il Nudo (Florence). Exhibitions of his pictures, u. a. together with works by Helmut Newton and Allan Jones, could be viewed worldwide; including in the gallery Les Larmes d'Eros (Paris), in the Erotic Art Museum Hamburg , in the Camera and Photo Museum Leipzig , and in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna (Bologna).

Since 2008 the photographer has traveled to Africa several times for photo projects. For this he received the “Michael Horbach Foundation Photo Prize” in 2013. For several years now, Thomas Karsten has also been working as a cameraman for film productions, music videos and image films. For the Film State Research Bureau he received the “Best Cinematography” award at the Pearl International Film Festival 2012 in Kampala - Uganda. He shot this film alone as DOP (Director of Photography), sometimes with 2 cameras at the same time, for the Ugandan film production company Bish Films.

Since 2013 he has lived and worked in a former church in Uffenheim near Würzburg.
