Thomas Kietzmann (* before 1989 in Greifswald ) is a German doctor and biochemist. He is Professor of Biochemistry at Oulu University in Finland.

Career

Thomas Kietzmann studied medicine at the University of Greifswald and graduated in 1989 with a degree in medicine. As a UNESCO International Training Research Fellow, he stayed at the Institute of Genetics of the Hungarian Academy of Science in Szeged , Hungary, from 1989 . Two years later he received his doctorate. med. at the University of Greifswald. A post-doctoral stay brought him to the University of Göttingen , where he passed his specialist medical degree in 1996 and received his habilitation in 2001 at the Institute for Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology. He stayed at the same university as a private lecturer in biochemistry and molecular cell biology. In 2004 he accepted an appointment as professor of biochemistry at the University of Kaiserslautern . In 2009 he followed a call to the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at the University of Oulu to the Chair of Cellular Biochemistry, where he has been active in research and teaching ever since.

research

Kietzmann's research focuses on the subjects of oxygen sensing, hemostasis , oncology and cancer research, liver functions, metabolism and nutrition, as well as oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS). He made important contributions in the field of transcriptional regulation of the plasminogen activator inhibitor -1 (PAI-1) gene by hypoxia and other mediators. He leads research in several national, international and EU projects, and acts as an advisory expert for several organizations, including the European Commission . For his work, Kietzmann has received several academic awards and honors, including an award from the German Working Group on the Study of the Liver (GASL) and the Austrian Society for Thrombosis and Hemostasis Research (GTH).

Publications

In his research work so far (as of 2017), Kietzmann has written 128 publications in scientific journals as well as articles in books.
