Thomas Matthias Klapötke (born February 24, 1961 in Göttingen ) is a German inorganic chemist . Since 1997 he has been Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Life

Klapötke graduated from high school in Steglitz in Berlin. He studied chemistry at the TU Berlin , where he completed his intermediate diploma in 1982, and passed his diploma examination in 1984. He did his doctorate in 1986, also at the TU Berlin. In 1990 he completed his habilitation at the TU Berlin. He was then a private lecturer at the TU Berlin between 1990 and 1995. From 1995 to 1997 he was Professor of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow . In 1997 he accepted the call to a C4 professorship for inorganic chemistry at the LMU Munich. Klapötke rejected calls to the Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Vienna.

Klapötke researches at the LMU Munich with a working group of around 30 employees, primarily on explosives; its employees are checked by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution . According to media reports, Klapötke heads the "only university chemistry laboratory in Germany that deals with defense technology". His chair has received over US $ 1 million from the US military for explosives research since 2000.
