Thomas Knauer was a German hymn poet who lived in the 16th century.

Life

Thomas Knauer was a Lutheran preacher in Amberg and opposed the plan of Elector Friedrich III. to introduce the Reformed Church in the Upper Palatinate. In November 1566 Knauer took part in a disputation announced by the elector with the reformer Caspar Olevian . The elector's opponents were not convinced by the dispute, but the elector did not give up and continued against the Lutherans. Finally Knauer was relieved of his office in 1573, but continued to receive his salary.

Knauer composed individually printed sacred songs, the German hymn researcher Philipp Wackernagel has handed down two of these songs, from 1562 and 1568 respectively.
