successes

Thomas Ranken took part in the Olympic Games in London in 1908 and in Paris in 1924 . With the free rifle he took fifth place in the individual competition over 1000 yards. On the running deer he won the silver medal in both a single shot and a double shot. In a single shot he was only one point behind Olympic gold medalist Oscar Swahn , while in a double shot he reached first place tied with Walter Winans . In the following jump-off he lost to Winans with 41 to 44 points. In the team competition, only two teams, Great Britain and Sweden, started in a single shot. Sweden narrowly prevailed with 86 to 85 points, so Ranken, who scored the weakest result of the British with 18 points , received the silver medal together with Charles Nix , William Ellicott and William Lane-Joynt . In 1924 he started again in the single and double shot of the running deer. In both competitions he did not get past 22nd place.

Ranken served in the British Army .
