Thomas Reich (born June 11, 1963 ) is a German chess player .

Reich won the Bavarian Individual Championship twice: in 1990 in Vorra and in 2003 in Bad Neustadt an der Saale . He also won the Bavarian individual championship in blitz chess twice : 1990 in Krumbach and 2004 in Röthenbach an der Pegnitz . Reich won the IM tournament at Viktoria Prague in 1991 and the Munich city championship in 2001. In 2001 he was split 1st – 3rd at the Open in Augsburg and shared 1st – 5th at the Open in Augsburg in 2003. He won the Open in Bad Königshofen in 2006.

He plays club chess for Bayern Munich , with whom he plays from 2008 to 2011 and again since 2013 in the German 1st Bundesliga . From 1990 to 1996 he played in the 1st division for Munich SC 1836 , with which he also took part in the 1994 European Club Cup . He has been playing in the Austrian 1st Bundesliga since 2001 for SK Sparkasse Jenbach, with whom he became Austrian team champion in 2010 .

He was awarded the title of International Master in 1994.

Stylistically, as a player, he pursues a more speculative than a theoretically correct approach. For example, he has a preference for high-chance sacrifices that can cause problems for the opponent in a practical game, even if these may not withstand a more detailed analysis by the computer.
