Thomas Schertwitis

Thomas Schertwitis (born September 2, 1972 in Alma-Ata , Kazakh SSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Kazakh German water polo player .

Career

Schertwitis was born in what is now Kazakhstan, then still part of the Soviet Union, into a Russian-German family. There he began his career and from 1993 competed internationally for the now independent Kazakhstan. With the Kazakh national team he won the Asian Games in 1994 and finished 12th in the 1994 World Cup .

In 1997 he moved to Berlin and played for Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 until 2004 . With the Wasserfreunde he won seven German championship titles and six times the cup competition. In 2004 Schertwitis moved to Olympiacos in Greece, a year later he moved on to Sintez Kazan in Russia. With Kazan he celebrated his first European Cup victory in 2006 by winning the LEN Trophy .

Schertwitis has had German citizenship since June 15, 1998 and has played for the German national water polo team ever since. He took part in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , where the German team came in 5th. At the 2005 World Cup , the German team finished 9th, in 2007 the team came 8th in 2003 and in 2008 the team was sixth at the European Championships. Schertwitis completed 272 international matches (as of July 12, 2008).

The 1.98 m tall Schertwitis played in the center position.
