Thomas Schmidt is a German theater manager and university lecturer .

Live and act

Thomas Schmidt studied literature , languages ​​and economics . He then first worked in development policy and was involved in West Africa and Mauritius , among others . Between 1999 and 2003 he was responsible for the international area in the KfW branch in Berlin , where he was responsible for political communication, among other things.

In 2003 he established the free and privately financed Neue Schauspiel Erfurt , where he also worked as a producer and dramaturge and wrote texts for five world premieres. Also in 2003, he was appointed Managing Director of the German National Theater Weimar , which he ran together with the Artistic Director. In this role he played a key role in the implementation of the Weimar model and its transformation into a state theater. Schmidt became interim director in 2012.

Schmidt also taught theater management and strategic controlling at the Liszt School of Music Weimar from 2003 . Since 2011, he has been professor of the master's degree in “Theater and Orchestra Management” at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and teaches theater management , repertoire, drama / dramaturgy , cultural policy and cultural theory .

In 2014 Schmidt was a visiting professor at Harvard University . He is also a voluntary consultant and member of the board of the Ensemble-Netzwerk eV He is a member of the board of the Hessian Theater Academy , the Shakespeare and Dramaturgical Society and also advises theater managers and artistic directors. He received his doctorate with the book “The rules of the game. Program and program design in the theater ”.

Research priorities

In his work, Schmidt focuses on the training of young talent in the management levels of German theaters. He also develops theses for the reform of the German theater system and the reorganization of public theaters. In this context, numerous publications in the form of books and articles were created.
