Thomas Schmitz (cellist)

Thomas Schmitz (* 1978 ) is a German cellist and university professor.

Life

After finishing school, Thomas Schmitz studied violoncello at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne in the class of Claus Kanngiesser, where he graduated in 2001 with a diploma. In addition, he was trained by Dmitri Ferschtman in Amsterdam for a year and took part in master classes in Berlin with Wolfgang Boettcher , with Carter Brey in New York and with Arto Noras in Helsinki .

From 2001 to 2004 he studied at the Music Academy of the City of Basel with Thomas Demenga , where he passed the concert exam as a soloist. In 2004 he was a member of the Essen Philharmonic , but shortly afterwards devoted himself entirely to the Signum Quartet , to which he has been a member since the ensemble was founded in 1994.

Thomas Schmitz and the Signum Quartet were honored and supported with numerous prizes during his studies; Among other things, he received the 1st Federal Prize from Jugend musiziert in 1995 and has been supported by the Villa Musica Chamber Music Foundation since 1998 . The ensemble has become internationally known through its performances and sound recordings.

Thomas Schmitz was a guest musician for the rock bands Die Apokalyptischen Reiter during the recordings for the album Moral & Wahnsinn and Die Toten Hosen during the recordings for Ballast der Republik and Laune der Natur .

Thomas Schmitz has been teaching at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne since 2005.
