Thomas Schweizer (ethnologist)

Thomas Schweizer (born November 24, 1949 in Cologne ; † March 1, 1999 ) was a German ethnologist.

Life

From 1968 he studied ethnology, sociology, psychology and prehistoric archeology at the University of Cologne . His academic teachers included Ulla Johansen , Helmut Petri, René König , Erwin Scheuch and Rolf Ziegler . For his doctoral thesis, Schweizer combined the empirical approach of sociology with intercultural comparisons and anthropological questions.

After graduating in 1975, Schweizer accepted an assistant position at the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Cologne. In the following years, Schweizer not only held lectures and deepened his research on social networks, but also worked on site in Java / Indonesia in 1978/1979 and 1984. His main focus was on the economic field and its relationship to local social structures as well as historical issues .

He completed his habilitation thesis in 1984. In the following two years he received a Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the University of Cologne. After a short time at the University of Bayreuth , Schweizer took over a professorship at the Institute for Cultural and Social Anthropology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen in 1986 .

Schweizer returned to Cologne in 1990, where he was chairman of the department for social and cultural anthropology. In the following years he also led a number of research projects, e.g. B. at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies or the German Research Foundation. He died of leukemia in 1999 .
