Thomas Steffl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Steffl (* unknown in Krummau in Bohemia ; † October 14, 1943 in the Sobibor extermination camp ), also written as Thomas Steffel , was an SS squad leader who was killed in Camp II during the Sobibór uprising . Steffl came from the same place as the SS men Franz Wolf and Josef Wolf , who were also in the Sobibór extermination camp.

Steffl, who initially worked in the photo office of the Berlin headquarters of Aktion T4 , took up his service in the sorting barracks in the Sobibor extermination camp in February 1943 as part of “ Aktion Reinhardt ” . There he was responsible for supervision. In the sorting chamber, the work details of Rudolf Beckmann and Paul Johannes Groth sorted the clothing and searched for money and valuables. The shoes of the so-called transport Jews were picked up by Johann Klier 's command .

During the Sobibor uprising , he and Rudolf Beckmann were killed by the Jewish camp inmates Chaim Engel and Kapo Pożyczki on October 14, 1943. Like the other SS members who were killed, Steffl and Beckmann were buried with military honors in the Chełmer military cemetery.

Franz Wolf, who was chopping wood with prisoners in the forest command during the uprising and therefore survived the uprising, identified Steffl's body and was present at his funeral.
