Thomas Tipton

Thomas Tipton (born November 18, 1926 in Wyandotte , Michigan , USA ; † September 22, 2007 in Munich ) was an American opera singer ( baritone ) and actor.

Life

The son of a Polish immigrant family won a singing competition in Detroit, which led him to an engagement at the New York City Opera , where he made his debut in 1951 in the opera The Old Maid and the Thief , directed by Gian Carlo Menotti . In the mid-1950s he came to Europe on a Fulbright scholarship , where he studied at the Munich Academy of Music .

After starting his career in Munich, Tipton was engaged at the Nationaltheater Mannheim , the Staatstheater Stuttgart and again at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. The baritone became known internationally through performances in Bayreuth , Salzburg , London and New York. He was awarded the title of chamber singer .

Tipton also achieved fame as an actor through roles in the television series Kir Royal and in the movie Schtonk .

Thomas Tipton died in September 2007 of complications from a blood clot .

He was married to Ruth Tipton (* 1946).
