Thomas Ummenhofer (born February 8, 1964 in Überlingen ) is a German civil engineer and university professor.

Live and act

Thomas Ummenhofer attended elementary school and the Parler high school in Schwäbisch Gmünd . He then did basic military service in Ellwangen and studied civil engineering at the University of Karlsruhe (KIT). Ummenhofer chose structural engineering with a focus on steel construction. With the diploma thesis supervised by Friedrich Mang "Numerical investigations for load introduction in cylinder shells" and the interfacultative additional qualification in the field of plant, large-pipe and container construction, the 26-year-old graduate engineer had the best prerequisites to work as a scientific employee at the Research Institute for Steel, Wood and stones of the University of Karlsruhe (KIT) to successfully research. Thematically, Ummenhofer followed up on his diploma thesis and was awarded a Dr.-Ing. On July 4, 1996 with his dissertation “Stability behavior of imperfect cylindrical steel silos - experimental and numerical investigations” from the University of Karlsruhe. PhD. He was supervised by Professors Udo Peil, Ulrich Schulz and Karl Schweizerhof.

This was followed by successful years in engineering practice at the Braunschweig IPP engineering firm Prof. Peil + Partner , which was renamed IPU engineering firm Peil, Ummenhofer + Partner in July 2003 . Ummenhofer soon took over the commercial and technical management.

From June 2003 to March 2009 Ummenhofer developed a successful research activity as a professor on the newly created endowed professorship for building preservation and supporting structures at the TU Braunschweig . The implementation of the joint research project REFRESH - Life Extension of Existing and New Welded Steel Structures as part of the joint project in the product life cycle funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research also falls within this period. As the head of this major research project , which ran from January 1, 2006 to June 30, 2009 , Ummenhofer not only brought together representatives of different knowledge cultures from industry, science and public administration (...), but also promoted cognitive activity in his field with practical intent . To this end, he and Imke Weich edited a special issue for the Stahlbau magazine (September 2009 edition).

Since April 2009, Thomas Ummenhofer has been head of the internationally renowned chair for steel and light metal construction at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and, with Hans Jürgen Blaß, he is the collegial director of the research institute for steel, wood and stones founded in 1921 by Ernst Gaber (1881–1952), which, according to Gaber, was led by Professors Otto Steinhardt (1909–2000), Rolf Baehre (1928–2005) and Helmut Saal. Ummenhofer thus became the successor of Professors Ram Puthli and Helmut Saal, which were combined in one professorship. Today, the department at KIT headed by Ummenhofer, which covers all essential specialist areas of steel and light metal construction, has almost 50 employees, including approx. 35 scientists.

Thomas Ummenhofer works in numerous specialist committees such as B. in DIBt expert committees, in technical committees of the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS) and in relevant standards committees at national and international level. He has been a member of the Editorial Board of Steel Construction - Design and Research magazine since mid-2010 and on the Editorial Board of Stahlbau since August 2011.

In addition to his work in research and teaching, Ummenhofer also contributes to the further development of engineering practice through the IPU. He is a test engineer for structural engineering in the fields of metal construction and solid construction as well as a tester for the Federal Railway Office for solid, steel and composite construction.
