Friedrich Mang (2004)

Friedrich Mang (born March 6, 1934 in Heidelberg ; † May 6, 2007 in Karlsruhe ) was a German civil engineer and professor of steel construction at the University of Karlsruhe . He was known nationally and internationally above all for his commitment to plant construction and welding technology for load-bearing components and set standards in large pipe and container construction as well as in joining technology for metallic materials.

Life

Friedrich Mang grew up in Frankenthal / Palatinate and in 1954 passed the school leaving examination at the state-run natural science high school in Ludwigshafen . Then came the study at the TH Karlsruhe , followed by a five-year activity as a scientific assistant at the chair for steel and light metal construction at the University of Karlsruhe under Otto Steinhardt . In 1965 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the load-bearing behavior of steel pressure pipelines. Numerous works on pipe branches and large pipe storage followed.

Professional background

After completing his doctorate, Friedrich Mang focused on issues relating to plant construction in its entirety and quickly gained a reputation for it. At the same time, he dealt with joining technology in steel and light metal construction, with an initial focus on the then new bonded connections, which later, for various reasons, could not establish themselves in practice. As a result, the focus shifted more and more to welded constructions. Further topics were the fatigue strength of welded components made of high-strength fine-grained structural steels, investigations into over-welding of production coatings in steel construction , the fatigue behavior of welded aluminum constructions and the influence of the production of cut edges and holes on the fatigue strength of steel constructions. He was appointed adjunct professor in 1973 and professor in 1987. Under the direction of Rolf Baehre, he led the joining technology and materials department at the research institute for steel, wood and stone. From 1976 until reaching the age limit, he worked as a test engineer for structural engineering with a branch in Karlsruhe .

Bodies

Mang worked in numerous specialist bodies and professional associations. He was a member of CIDECT, ISOPE and the IIW Working Group XV (tubular structures) as well as the IIW Working Group XIII (fatigue) and RILEM TC 142. He was a member of the expert committee "Metallbauwerkstoffe" and in DVS on the board of the district association Karlsruhe-Bretten-Bruchsal.
