Thomas Vaughan (nobleman, † around 1493)
Sir Thomas Vaughan († around 1493) was a Welsh nobleman. He was the eldest son of Roger Vaughan von Tretower and his first wife Denise, a daughter of Thomas ap Philip Vaughan from Talgarth . He should not be confused with the Welsh courtier of the same name, Thomas Vaughan , who was executed in 1483.
Youth and heritage
Thomas Vaughan served as a squire at the royal court and in 1468 vouched for the debts of his uncle William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke . After his father was executed during the Wars of the Roses in 1471 , Thomas inherited his property. He had Tretower Court , his father's residence, expanded. During the minority of Anne , daughter and heiress of John Mowbray, 4th Duke of Norfolk , he became administrator of their South Welsh dominion Gower on October 7, 1480 .
Life
When the Duke of Buckingham against King Richard III in October 1483 . When Vaughan and other relatives rebelled, they refused to support him and instead looted Brecon Castle , a castle in Buckingham. Vaughan was then knighted and the king rewarded him on March 4, 1484 with the lifelong transfer of administration of Brecon , Hay and Huntington . After Richard III. Defeated in 1485 by Henry Tudor, later Henry VII , at the Battle of Bosworth , Vaughan's position as one of the leading Yorkists in South Wales was in danger. In 1486 he plundered Brecon Castle again, but on April 2, 1487 the king pardoned him. Vaughan, however, had to return parts of the estates his father had acquired at the expense of Lancastrians during the Wars of the Roses .
Like other members of his family, Thomas was a generous patron of Welsh bards. Several bards such as Lewis Glyn Cothi , Dafydd Epynt , Ieuan ap Huw Cae Llwyd or Huw Dafi sang about his deeds.
Family and offspring
Thomas was married twice. His first marriage was Cissil, a daughter of Morgan ap Jenkin from Gwent. In his second marriage after 1485 he married Jane, the widow of Walter Devereux, 1st Baron Ferrers of Chartley , one of the leading supporters of the House of York. He had three sons, Roger, Watkin and Henry.
