Thomas W. Vahlenkamp

Thomas W. Vahlenkamp (* 1963 in Koblenz ) is a German veterinarian and director of the Institute for Virology at the Veterinary Medicine Faculty of the University of Leipzig . He is a veterinarian specializing in virology, bacteriology and mycology, and immunology. As dean of studies, he is responsible for teaching.

Life

Thomas Wilhelm Vahlenkamp was born in Koblenz and grew up in Ludwigshafen. He studied veterinary medicine at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Munich , where he 1993 on antiviral studies on the effectiveness itself against the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection in in vitro test systems and experimentally FIV-infected cats to Dr. med vet. PhD . He then worked for five years in the Virology Department of the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Utrecht , Netherlands , where he obtained a Ph.D. Before he moved to the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University in Raleigh (North Carolina) for three years , he worked as a university assistant at the Institute of Virology at the University of Leipzig's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

After his return in 2004, Vahlenkamp was laboratory manager at the Institute for Molecular Biology at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) in Greifswald on the island of Riems in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and personal advisor to FLI President Thomas Mettenleiter . From this position he was appointed head of the Institute for Infection Medicine at the FLI in 2009. During this time, he also held a teaching position as a specialist veterinarian for virology, microbiology and immunology and serology at the Free University of Berlin and was the head of the OIE and National Reference Laboratory for Enzootic Bovine Leukosis and the National Reference Laboratory for Maedi-Visna and Caprine Arthritis-Encephalitis .

Since October 2010 Thomas Vahlenkamp has been Professor of Virology at the University of Leipzig and Director of the Institute for Virology in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. His research focus is the immunopathogenesis of viral infections with a focus on influenza , retro and rotaviruses . The research database of the University of Leipzig shows an average of eleven publications by Vahlenkamp in German and English for the years 2010 to 2013, primarily in specialist publications.

Memberships

Vahlenkamp is u. a. Member of the editorial board of the international journals Virus Genes, Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology and Veterinary Practice. He is a deputy member of the Central Commission for Biosafety (ZKBS) for the field of virology. He is also a member of the non-profit Robert Koch Foundation, which promotes medical progress and supports the fight against infectious diseases and other common diseases.

In addition to his work in research and teaching, Vahlenkamp is Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of GVG Diagnostics GmbH. The Leipzig biotechnology company has specialized in the veterinary diagnostics of laboratory animals and is developing new health tests for the detection of infectious diseases.

During his stay in the USA he was involved in two parishes, which he continued after his return to Germany in the cathedral parish of St. Nikolai in Greifswald. He is currently a member of the church council of the Martin Luther parish in Markkleeberg near Leipzig.

Vahlenkampf belongs to the Christian student union Munich Wingolf .
