Thomas Werner (born May 4, 1962 in Kiel ) is a German architect and art historian . Since December 2012 he has been the chief city ​​curator in the Office for Monument Protection and Preservation of the City of Cologne .

Career

Werner studied architecture from 1984 to 1991 at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences , from which he graduated with a diploma, and then until 1997 a master's degree in art history, archeology and philosophy at the universities of Cologne and Bonn . In 2000 he received his doctorate in Cologne with the thesis The structure systems of the early Staufer choir facades in the Rhine-Maas area .

Werner gained practical experience as an architect between 1988 and 2002 as an employee and project manager in architecture offices in Düsseldorf and Cologne. Since 2003 he has been a regular reviewer for the trade journal Bauwelt and the online review journal Kunstform .

After teaching assignments at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, a temporary professorship at the msa - muenster school of architecture for the history and theory of architecture followed from 2005 to 2008 . He then received a visiting professorship for the history of architecture and design at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art in Halle an der Saale . In 2011 he was a substitute professor for design in existing buildings and monument preservation at the Detmold location of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences .

Parallel to his last professorship, Werner was commissioned by the City of Cologne in April 2011 to oversee the revitalization of the “Gerling Quarter” in the district around the Romanesque church of St. Gereon . He then became deputy head of department and department for practical monument preservation, building research and inventory. Since December 2012 he has held the office of city curator, which he had been acting provisionally for the retired Renate Kaymer since summer 2012 .

Werner wants to work to ensure that Cologne's Romanesque churches are placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List . He also wants buildings from the 1960s and 1970s in the city of Cologne not to be demolished without criticism. He also placed the European School in the Raderthal district of Cologne under monument protection.
