Thomas Wilms

Thomas Wilms (born April 16, 1970 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) is a German zoologist , non-fiction author and former director of the Allwetterzoo Münster .

Life

Thomas Wilms studied biology at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and received his doctorate in 2010 from the University of Bonn . From 2000 to 2001 he completed an internship at the Frankfurt Zoo and then at the Palatinate Museum for Natural History , Bad Dürkheim (2001). From 2001 to 2002 Wilms was employed as a scientific volunteer in the vivarium of the State Museum for Natural History in Karlsruhe and in 2003 he accepted the offer to plan and realize a reptile zoo. From 2004 to 2008 Wilms was the zoological director of the “ Reptilium Terrarium and Desert Zoo ” in Landau. From 2008 to 2014 he was curator for mammals at Frankfurt Zoo. From February 2014 to December 2015 Thomas Wilms was Deputy Director of Frankfurt Zoo and Head of the Scientific Department. Since January 1, 2016 Wilms was director of the Allwetterzoo Münster. On July 4, 2018, the City Council of Münster approved the master plan Allwetterzoo 2030 PLUS presented by Wilms with an overwhelming majority. The master plan for the Allwetterzoo Münster with a financial volume of 59 million euros can thus be implemented. At the end of June 2020, Wilms gave up his position as zoo director in Münster. He had waived a possible contract extension and gave personal reasons for his departure. He had been trading with the Westphalian metropolis since 2019 and never really felt comfortable there.

Research trips took him to Morocco, Mauritania, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates.
