Thomas de Vipont

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas de Vipont († October 25, 1256 ) was an English clergyman. From 1254 he was Bishop of Carlisle .

Thomas de Vipont came from the originally Anglo- Norman Viexpont family from Westmorland , one of the most powerful aristocratic families in North West England. Vipont was named a Magister , which suggests that he attended high school and was appointed a clergyman at an early age. His offices included the rectorate of Greystoke , which he had probably received through his family's ties to the Lords of Greystoke . After the death of Silvester de Everdon , Bishop of Carlisle, King Henry III wished to his chaplain John of Skipton as the new bishop. The cathedral chapter of Carlisle but insisted on its independence and rejected its election. Instead, in August or September 1254 , the canons elected Vipont as their new bishop. The king finally accepted this election and on December 24th gave Vipont the temporalities of the Diocese of Carlisle . He was ordained bishop on February 7, 1255.

Although Vipont came from one of the leading aristocratic families in the region, he had little contact outside of his diocese, for example with the royal court. Four certificates have survived from his short tenure, which he issued either in his residences in Bewley or Rose Castle .
