Thomas from the Way

Thomas von der Way is a German Egyptologist .

Life

He traveled to the Near and Middle East from 1975 to 1981 and studied Egyptology in Heidelberg and Trier from 1975 to 1982 as well as Assyriology and Prehistory and Protohistory (as minor subjects) in Heidelberg. From 1977 to 1980 he worked on the excavation of the German Archaeological Institute in Merimde / Beni-Salama and from 1978 to 1981 on the Heidelberg Ramessiden project. After completing his doctorate in 1982 at Heidelberg University , he was a consultant in the Cairo department of the DAI from 1983 to 1989 . From 1983 to 1992 he headed a DAI excavation on Tell el-Fara'in / Buto . After his habilitation in 1992 at the University of Heidelberg, he has been teaching since 1993 with regular leave of absence at the University of Mainz , where he was appointed adjunct professor in 1999 . At the University of Vienna he had visiting professorships (2000/2001/2003). He has lived continuously in Cairo since 1983 - now with his wife Bettina and two children (Viktoria and Leonard).
