The Thomaskirche is the Protestant church in the Zähringen district of Freiburg im Breisgau . In addition to the Ludwigskirche, it belongs to the north parish of the Evangelical Church in Freiburg.

history

After the Second World War , the parish vicariate of the Ludwigsgemeinde in Freiburg-Herdern became too large due to the influx of refugees and expellees, and a separate parish was set up in Zähringen. For this a new church was built from 1958 according to plans by the Freiburg architect Walter Körte (1893–1973). The church was consecrated on November 28, 1959.

The free-standing bell tower on the southwest corner of the property was built in 1961. In it hang three bells with a total weight of 2925 kg: the large prayer bell, the Thomas bell and, as the smallest, the baptismal bell.

description

The cubic church is 22.4 meters long, 14 meters wide and 12.5 meters high. With the adjoining hall it has space for a good 300 people; There is an additional 80 people on the gallery and another 100 people in the hall, which can be opened to the church.

When the interior space width altar wall of bright Black Forest falls granite - rubble into which obliquely an artistically designed stained glass window is recessed above the altar. Floor-to-ceiling clear glass windows made of molded concrete blocks illuminate the chancel to the right and left. The floor is made of black slate , the other walls of visible, brightly jointed brick masonry .

The artistic concrete glass windows of the church were designed by Hugo Körte (1897–1974), the architect's younger brother. The altar window shows the Lamb of God , the three gallery windows the motifs cock , ears of wheat and the wise and the foolish virgins . Further designs were not realized ( oil lamps / virgins , pigeon , fish , crown of thorns , grain and wine , holy spirit dove ).

change

From 2020 the community center with church, hall, rectory and kindergarten will undergo a fundamental change that was planned in 2014, but could not begin until 2020 and should be completed in 2022. According to plans by the Sacker architecture firm from Freiburg, the church is being converted into a multifunctional community center, which will be joined by a four-story nursing home run by the Evangelical City Mission in place of the low-rise daycare center. As the new property owner, she has to give up her nursing home in the city center, as it no longer meets today's standards and the necessary renovation would not be economically viable.
