Dam detail

The Thomb is a 100 meter long, late medieval dam in the village of St. Lorenzen am Steinfeld , municipality of Ternitz in Lower Austria . The dam dammed the St. Lorenzer Bach and thus served the economic use of the small amounts of water in the Flatzer valley.

history

The Thomb can be traced for the first time in the Flatzer Dorftaiding from 1630, where it is mentioned as part of the boundary description of the castle peace ("uber den Thomb"). But it should be much older. Below the dam, the foundation walls of a mill originally owned by Gurk , which used the dammed water, have been preserved. Ceramic finds in the area of the mill could be dated to 1450. It is possible that the dam was built even earlier: with the founding of the Flatzer Castle (around 1130) on the hill on which the vicarage stands today, there was an increased need for water, which in the Flatzer Valley is not sufficiently available throughout the year It said there were neither springs nor wells nearby, at most cisterns .

The pond dammed up by the dam was also used for fish farming. For example, Franz Schweickhardt wrote in 1833: “There used to be a mill by the pond that no longer exists. As a rule, every 4 years is fished in the pond, which contains a few pike but a lot of carp and crayfish. ”In the 19th and early 20th centuries, ice was cut in winter for the surrounding inns .

Current state

The newly created fish pond

The pond no longer exists, in its place there is only marshy reed area . The St. Lorenzer Bach flows under the dam. A new fish pond was created below. The connecting road from St. Lorenzen to Mahrersdorf runs over the dam .
