Thorsten Dirks

Thorsten Dirks (* 1963 in Hamburg ) is a German manager. From October 2014 to December 2016 he was CEO of Telefónica Deutschland Holding and a member of the Management Board of Telefonica Europe plc. On May 1, 2017, he became a member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and since April 8, 2020 has been responsible for the Executive Board department “Digital and Finance”.

Life

Dirks studied electrical engineering and communications engineering at the University of Hamburg . In 1996 he came to E-Plus and was responsible for the areas of networks, innovation and IT. In 2007, Dirks then took over the management of E-Plus as CEO. As a board member of KPN , Dirks has also been responsible for the Group's international mobile communications business since 2011 . Dirks retained the chairmanship of the E-Plus board until the merger with Telefonica in 2014 and has been a board member in the new company since October 2014. During his time at E-Plus, Dirks was responsible for the E-Plus Group's multi-brand strategy .

In November 2016 it was announced that Dirks would leave the company early at the end of the 1st quarter of 2017. On December 7, 2016, it was announced that he would be joining Eurowings .

Dirks has been on the Lufthansa Executive Board since May 1, 2017 . Until December 2019 he was responsible for "Eurowings and Aviation Services". Here he spoke out in 2018 against continuing the construction of BER and in favor of its demolition. One of the reasons he gave was that all the technology that was installed in 2012 is now outdated. From January 1, 2020, he headed the “IT, Digital & Innovation” department, which was expanded on April 8, 2020 and renamed “Digital and Finance”. On June 26, 2020 Lufthansa announced Dirks' departure from the group.

Dirks was president of the industry association Bitkom from 2015 to 2017 .

Private

Thorsten Dirks is married and has one son.
