Thorvald Steen (born January 9, 1954 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian writer .

Biographical

Thorvald Steen studied history and philosophy. He made his literary debut in 1983 with a volume of poetry. As a result he published a number of novels, plays, poems and short stories. He achieved his breakthrough in Norway in 1992 with his cycle of poems Ilden . Shortly thereafter came his international recognition with the novels Don Carlos (1993) and Giovanni (1995). From 1991 to 1997 Steen was President of the Norwegian Writers' Union. In 1993 he received a grant from Gyldendal Norsk Verlag and in 2001 the Dobloug Prize for his complete works. Steen has been a board member of the Norwegian PEN since 2003. He is married with two children and lives in Oslo.

Thorvald Steen's work has been translated into more than twenty languages ​​and includes poetry, plays, children's books, short stories, essays and novels. Including four historical novels, two about Charles Darwin ( Don Carlos , Giovanni ) and about the last days of the Icelandic Edda author Snorri Sturluson ( Den lille hesten ) who was murdered in 1241 and for which he received the Comenius Medal of the University of Bratislava in 2006 . His novel Kamelskyer , which was also translated into German ( Kamelwolken ), was voted novel of the year in 2007 by the Turkish newspaper Bir Gun .
