Three Kingdoms: In the Year of the Dragon ( Chinese  傲世 三国 , International: Fate of the Dragon) is a real-time strategy game based on real historical events (recorded by Chen Shou in his Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms ). It was distributed in Europe by Eidos Interactive .

action

The game takes place in the history of China, around 184 AD. The player chooses one of the three warlords of the Three Kingdoms ( Liu Bei from Shu, Cao Cao from Wei and Sun Quan from Wu), builds his own empire, develops new technologies and create powerful armies to conquer other kingdoms and eventually unite the three kingdoms.

Game description

Game modes

The player can choose between three game modes: Campaign, Skirmish and Multiplayer. The first mode allows the player to take on the role of the leader of one of the three realms: Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Quan. He finally reunited China in several successive missions. In the second mode, the game takes place on a map chosen by the player with fixed parameters. In multiplayer mode, you can play against other players via the LAN connection and the Internet.

Gameplay

The gameplay is very similar to other real-time strategy games: collect resources, build an army and defeat the enemy. Three Kingdoms distinguished the following functions : In the year of the dragon at the time of publication with other offshoots of this genre:

  • Randomly generated natural disasters such as fires, diseases or earthquakes appear. To avoid this, or to mitigate the effects, the player must build a temple and develop appropriate technologies.
  • To recruit soldiers, an inactive citizen must be sent to one of the three barracks (swordsman, archer and lance fighter barracks) for appropriate training.
  • Horses must be trained separately. Soldiers can ride horses into battle, but horses always remain neutral; That is, enemy soldiers can also use the horses.
  • The game takes place on several maps: There is a main map with cities and villages. When the player enters a city, he lands on the corresponding city card.
  • The cities are already surrounded by a wall. The gate is the only weak point in the wall that can be destroyed by enemy soldiers and artillery. Alternatively, the wall can be climbed with the help of ladders or bypassed in other ways.
  • In the inn it is possible to recruit heroes for gold. There are three types of heroes. If a hero dies, he will appear again at some point in the inn. In contrast to the soldiers, the heroes rise in experience levels and have a loyalty value that steadily decreases. This value affects the hero's attack damage. To increase this value, the player can give the hero gold and give him official titles. There are a variety of titles such as "Prime Minister", "General who conquered the East" and "Officer of the West". Each title can only be awarded once and is only available again when the hero in question receives another title or the title holder dies. There are also four official honorary posts that must be occupied by heroes in order to receive the relevant technologies. The heroes are unique according to the portraits and names and are intended to represent the historical characters.
  • There are Buddha statues without a head on the cards. Citizens can repair headless Buddha statues. In return you receive either more citizens, resources, horses, military units or gold.
  • Gold is mainly obtained through taxes. You can adjust the tax rate yourself. Both their own city or cities and the captured villages pay taxes on a monthly basis. The tax rate has an impact on population growth.
  • Warfare: As soon as the soldiers leave their own city map, they are no longer provided with food, meat and wine. This reduces the soldiers' attack damage. The longer the soldiers are outside their own city, the weaker they become. To increase the attack on an enemy city again, supply stores can be set up. Supply stores carry a limited amount of food, meat and wine from their own town. Soldiers can be housed in the camp so that they can recover.

To win the game, the player must capture all enemy cities by defeating the opposing forces there and conquering the government building. A conquered city then immediately falls under the control of the conqueror.
