Throwing It All Away is a song by Genesis released in 1986 . It was the second single from the album Invisible Touch and reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 , number 22 in the UK and number 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.
The song is a rock ballad that revolves around a guitar riff by Mike Rutherford, who also wrote the lyrics.
Music video
A music video for the song consisted of footage from the soundcheck and recordings of the band on their Invisible Touch tour of North America. Much of it was shot by Phil Collins on his handheld camera in 1985, mostly in Toronto and Detroit. It can be seen on their DVD The Video Show.
reception
Stevie Chick described the song as an "effective ballad" in The Guardian in 2014 and stated that it "could easily have fitted onto his solo albums ".
François Couture rated the song for Allmusic : "This love song contained heartfelt vocals, simple piano accompaniment and Mike Rutherford's signature rhythm guitar, as well as a very catchy chorus. Nothing striking, but the elements fit well and adult contemporary radio stations played it extensively."
