Thubten Zopa Rinpoche ( Tibetan ཐུབ་ བསྟན་ བཟོད་ པ་ ; * January 1946 in Thame, Nepal as Dawa Chötar ) is a Nepalese Lama of Tibetan Buddhism from Solo Khumbu , the region southwest of Mount Everest .

Life

Childhood and youth

At the age of three, the reincarnation of the Lawudo Lama was recognized in him . The young Lama Zopa began his studies in Solo Khumbu in the traditional Tibetan way.

Tibet (1950–1959)

During a pilgrimage to Tibet on which he accompanied his uncle, the Zopa Rinpoche made the decision to devote his life to the study and practice of the Dharma . He stayed at Dung-kar Monastery and had to flee when the Chinese invaded Tibet in 1959. Eventually he became a student of Geshe Rabten in a refugee camp in Buxa Duar, Bhutan .

Foundation of the FPMT (Foundation for the Preservation of Mahayana Tradition)

In 1965 Lama Zopa met Lama Yeshe . Together they traveled to Nepal and lived in Boudhanath , near Kathmandu, and founded the Kopan Monastery there. Lama Zopa Rinpoche started his teachings in 1971 and gave his first meditation class at Kopan Monastery. The two lamas were invited by western students to give lessons all over the world, so that the FPMT network expanded globally. Over the years, over 150 centers of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition have emerged .

Today Lama Zopa Rinpoche is the spiritual director of these centers and spends his life traveling the world, giving teachings and thus spreading the Dharma of wisdom, love, compassion and universal responsibility.
