The Thulehuset (German Thulehaus, also Skandiahuset or after the address Sveavägen 44 ) is an office building in the Norrmalm district in the center of the Swedish capital Stockholm . The functionalist- style building was built between 1938 and 1942 according to plans by architect Gustaf Clason as the new headquarters of the Thule Group .

After he moved out, the building was used by Skandia until 2010 .

history

For the construction of a new head office, Thule acquired land in the Träsket block between Sveavägen and Luntmakargatan streets , on which the snus factory and the home of industrialist Knut Ljunglöf and the Ljunglöfska salongen were previously located, which were demolished for the new building.

The Thulehuset was originally planned as a building that would take up the entire block. When completed in 1942, the house was considered the most rational in the country. Rationality and efficiency were the guiding principles, with the wellbeing of employees being the focus. The respective workstations were carefully designed for their respective purposes and a conveyor belt for letters ran under the windows between the various departments. The windows of the 123 meter long building were also adapted to the furniture inside: with a window width of 1.50 meters, care was taken to adjust the width of the tables to 70 centimeters and the space between the workstations to 80 centimeters. The distance between the windows was also exactly 152 centimeters. Flexible elements such as glass walls or partition walls were used between the workstations. The facade of the Thulehuset was designed with components from the Rakodur factory in Czechoslovakia .

In the years between 1954 and 1961 the building was extended to the parallel street Luntmakargatan . In 1966 a major interior work was carried out for the new owner Skandia , the responsibility of the architects Alfreds & Larsén.

The building was used by the company until the move from Skandia to Kungsholmen in 2010. After a renovation commissioned by the new owner Skandia Fastigheter between 2011 and 2014, offices, hotels, a market hall and a roof terrace are now located here. Sweden's first roof park with ecological diversity was also implemented by the company BREEAM .

Events

The Norska utställningen 1943 (German Norwegian Exhibition 1943) took place in the building from March 10th to April 27th, 1943 , with the aim of maintaining awareness of Norwegian culture and history in Sweden.

After the Second World War, the Thulehuset was also the base of the Swedish branch of the stay-behind organization , which would have carried out resistance against the occupying forces in the event of an enemy occupation.

On the evening of February 28, 1986, Stig Engström , who, according to the public prosecutor's office, is the alleged perpetrator in the murder of the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme , worked in the building.
