Bretby

Bretby Pond

Bretby is a village with 893 (2011) inhabitants in the south of Derbyshire north of Swadlincote and east of Burton upon Trent , on the border between Derbyshire and Staffordshire . The region is the East Midlands . The name means "battlefield between the British".

history

Bretby is said to have been the site of a great battle between the Danes and the Kingdom of Mercia in 880 . Bretebi is mentioned in Domesday Book 1086. In Derbyshire, apart from Bretby and Newton Solney , the English king also owned Repton , Milton , Wirksworth , Weston-on-Trent , Walton-on-Trent and Ashbourne .

Bretby Hall (built in 1812)

There was a castle near the church, which was destroyed during the time of King James I so that Bretby Hall could be built nearby . In 1585 the Stanhope family from Shelford bought Bretby, Philip Stanhope laid out the park in 1610, and the first Bretby Hall was built in 1630, which has since been the seat of the Earl of Chesterfield . George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon sold the property, which was completely rebuilt in 1812, in the 1920s to pay for the Tutankhamun expedition.

Bretby Parish Church

The parish church, which was renovated in 1877, is consecrated to St. Wystan .
