The hairy sparrow's tongue ( Thymelaea hirsuta ) is a species of the family of the daphne family (Thymelaeaceae).

description

The branched shrub reaches heights of 40 to 100 centimeters and mostly has overhanging or upright branches that are white felted when young. The scale-like leaves are 3 to 8 millimeters long, are somewhat fleshy and arranged like roof tiles. The side facing the axis is felty white, the other shiny green. These somewhat succulent leaves are adaptive features to a xerophytic way of life.

The four sepal lobes are yellow inside, white silk-haired outside and stand individually or up to five. The flower becomes 4 to 5 millimeters long.

Flowering time is from October to May.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.

Occurrence

The distribution area covers almost the entire Mediterranean area . The plant is adapted to extremely dry locations and thrives in garigues .
