The Tidène is a dry valley in the Aïr high mountains in Niger .

geography

The dry valley is located in the southwest of the Aïr high mountains and administratively belongs to the Tchirozérine department in the Agadez region . It runs roughly in an east-west direction over a length of about 60 kilometers and finally unites with the Tamazalak dry valley to form the Solomi dry valley .

As usual with dry valleys in the Aïr, the Tidène only carries water in the rainy season in the summer months. The climate and vegetation are typical of the Sahel . The largest settlements include Tidène , Boudari and Egandawel in the municipality of Tchirozérine .

Settlement history

Mano Dayak's grave on a hill above the Tidène (2004)

At the beginning of the 21st century, around 3000 Tuareg lived on the Tidène. They are descended from immigrants who moved into the valley from Kidal in the Adrar des Ifoghas at the end of the 19th century . They drove out other Tuareg groups that were already living here. As a result of severe droughts in 1972, 1973 and 1984, many families emigrated to the city of Agadez . In the 1980s and 1990s, European development cooperation organizations were active in the valley, with the Tidène-born activist Mano Dayak playing an important role in establishing contacts with the outside world.
