Deep in the Riff is a cooperative children's and board game that is based on the game Der Rattenfänger von Hameln by game designer Alex Randolph , who died in 2004 . The game for two to six players, ages five and up, lasts around 20 minutes per round. It was published by Amigo in 2017 . In 2018, the game was awarded the Austrian Spiel der Spiele award as a “game hit for children” and was included in the selection list for the most beautiful children's game graphics at the Graf Ludo graphics prize .

Theme and equipment

In the game, the players try to find as many inhabitants of a coral reef as possible . To do this, move four fish through the reef with one die and, depending on the number of your own fish, may uncover reef dwellers in one place in the reef. As a team, they win the game together if they manage to find all the reef inhabitants before they get back to the starting field together.

In addition to game instructions, the game material consists of:

  • a game board with the reef, resting places for the fish and connecting paths between them,
  • 4 fish figures with feet,
  • 28 double-sided printed tiles with marine animals on one side and 1, 2, 3 or 4 air bubbles on the other, as well
  • a cube.

Style of play

Before the game, the game board is set up in the middle of the table. The four fish figures with their feet are placed on the starting field at the lower edge of the playing field and the animal tiles are covered with the bubble side up in the reef, whereby the paths and resting places must remain free. The die is given to a randomly chosen starting player (according to the rules: “Who was last visiting an aquarium”).

Starting with a starting player, the game is played clockwise. The active player in each case rolls the six-sided dice and discusses it with his fellow players before his turn. Then he moves a selected fish forward by the number rolled. The little red arrow fish on the paths indicate the direction of migration of the respective path. If the selected fish is on a space with a “friendly octopus” and the player rolls a “6”, he may move any number of steps from one to six. Depending on the number of fish on the resting place reached, tiles with marine animals are now covered. The number of bubbles must correspond to the number of fish, although several tiles together may equal the number of fish. If tiles with more bubbles are turned over, others can be covered again with the corresponding number.

When a fish reaches the starting square, it stops there and cannot be moved any more. The game ends when the fourth and last fish has returned to the starting field. The team has won the game if all marine animals in the reef have turned over by then. If the players have not succeeded in uncovering all marine animals by this point, they have lost the game.
