GRAF LUDO is awarded annually since 2009 German game graphics Prize for board games and honors as the only price the artistic work of game designer. The name of the prize is a play on words and is made up of “Graf”, an abbreviation for graphics, and “Ludo”, the Latin expression for “I play”.

Structures and goals

The GRAF LUDO is awarded by the Leipzig trade fairmodel-hobby-game ”. The award aims to draw attention to the design of board games and the associated artistic performance. Because the joy of playing does not only come from great game concepts and ideas. An aesthetically appealing, exciting and associative design also contributes to this.

In addition to the graphics of the game box, the overall visual impression of other game materials such as the game plan and figures are included in the evaluation. An 8-member jury made up of specialist journalists and artists nominates three games from a long list of 12 for the shortlist in the two categories “Best children's game graphics” and “Best family game graphics”. The prize is endowed with 1,000 euros each and goes directly to the graphic designer.

The award ceremony will take place during the modell-hobby-spiel trade fair. The GRAF LUDO is usually awarded at the beginning of October.
