The magical labyrinth is a children's and family game by the game designer Dirk Baumann . The game for two to four players, ages six and up, takes around 20–30 minutes per round. It was published by Drei Magier Spiele in 2009 and won the children's game of the year 2009.

Theme and equipment

The game is about a race between several young wizards in an invisible labyrinth in which they have to collect magical symbols. In addition to the instructions, the contents of the game box consist of:

  • a box bottom with a grid for an underground labyrinth
  • a game board that represents a floor tile
  • 4 pieces with magnetic base
  • 4 metal balls
  • 24 wooden wall parts
  • a six-sided die
  • 24 chips with symbols
  • a cloth bag

Style of play

To set up the playing field, the grid for the underground labyrinth is first placed in the bottom of the box. A labyrinth is created with the wooden parts of the wall and this is covered with the game board, on which the magic symbols are depicted, as a base plate and twisted. Then each player chooses a color and receives the corresponding colored pawn. He places this on the starting field of the base plate and attaches the steel ball underneath, which is held by the magnet in the foot of the figure. The game chips with the magic symbols are placed in the cloth bag, then a chip is drawn and placed on the corresponding symbol on the game board as a target marker.

The starting player rolls the dice and then moves his figure according to the number of dice on the playing field in a horizontal and vertical direction. As soon as he hits an underground wall, he loses the ball and places his figure back on the starting field. After the move, it is the next player's turn. As soon as a player has reached the chip on the board, he can take it, draw a new chip and place it on the board as a new target. The game ends when a player has reached five chips. He's the winner of the round.

Reception and extensions

The game The Magic Labyrinth won the children's game of the year critics award in 2009 and in Sweden it was children's game of the year the following year (Årets Spel 2010). It has also been nominated for numerous other awards.

Due to the success, a card game version of the game was released in 2010. In 2011 the game was also supplemented by an expansion package. The latter contained additional game components such as several magnetic walls as well as four wands, magic potions and night caps.
