Funkelschatz is a children's game and a skill game by the German game designer Günter Burkhardt and his daughter Lena. The game for two to four players, ages five and up, lasts around 15 minutes per round. It was published by HABA in 2017 and was named Children's Game of the Year in 2018 .

Theme and equipment

In the game, players play as four dragon children and try to get as many sparkling stones as possible that are caught in an ice pillar. They use the fire breath of the dragon father, with which the column is gradually melted and the sparkling stones are released.

In addition to game instructions, the game material consists of:

  • a game board that is set up on the bottom of the box with 4 partitions,
  • four dragon children,
  • a father dragon,
  • 90 sparkling stones, 18 each in 5 colors,
  • an ice floe plate,
  • 9 ice rings and
  • 5 sparkling stone tiles.

Style of play

Before the game, the game board is set up on the grid in the bottom of the box. The ice floe tile is placed in the designated hole in the middle of the game, and depending on the number of players, 8 or 9 ice rings are stacked on top of each other to form an ice column. The column is filled with the sparkling stones. Each player receives a child dragon figure and places it on one of the corners of the box. The dragon father and the sparkling stone tiles are laid out next to the game board.

Starting with a starting player, the game is played clockwise. The starting player places the father dragon in front of him as the starting player marker and is allowed to "spit fire" with it. In a three-player game, each player can take a colored sparkling stone tile; in a two-player game, each player takes two tiles. To choose, the players can look into the ice pillar and use it to estimate the color from which most of the sparkling stones will fall when the player lifts the top ring. The starting player takes down the top ring, where he can try to avoid falling stones for his fellow players. After the ring is removed, the fallen sparkling stones are distributed to the other players who have chosen the corresponding tiles. The other players throw the stones into the caves under their dragon children. Stones that fall through the holes in the game board and all stones on undistributed sparkling stone tiles are lost and belong to the father of the dragon. After the distribution, the dragon father is passed on to the next player and a new round is started.

The game ends after the round in which a player removes the last ice ring. At the end of the round, the stones that are no longer on the ice floe tile are distributed. Then the game board is removed and each player counts the stones won. The winner of the game is the player with the most sparkling stones.

variants

Two variants are described in the game instructions:

  • To make the game easier, each player can choose a sparkling stone at the beginning of the game, which then applies to the entire game; So it is not necessary to reassess the chances of winning every round.
  • The selection of the sparkling stone tiles can also take place secretly, so that the players do not know the color of their tile and only find out when the stones are distributed.

Versions and reception

The game was developed by the German game designer Günter Burkhardt and his daughter Lena and published in 2017 by HABA, a publisher specializing in children's games, in a multilingual version in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch. The game appeared in three packages with German, English (Dragon's Breath) and French (Trésor de glace) names.

In May 2018, the game was launched alongside Emojito! and Panic Mansion were nominated for Children's Game of the Year and won this award in June. The jury commented on the game and the decision as follows:

“A daughter-father team, the authors Lena and Günter Burkhardt, combine a child-friendly story, a classic mechanism and fascinating material to create a game adventure that keeps children captivated. When assessing and collecting, a cool head, a little bit of luck and a sure instinct are required. (Dragon) papa is the best. "
