Vikings Gone Wild (translated "The Vikings have gone mad") is a card game with a designed as a game board card display of the game author Julien Vergonjeanne which 2016 in English and French in the French game publisher Lucky Duck Games and a year later in German at Corax Games appeared . It is a deck building game in which the players use their deck of cards to build a Viking village, brew beer, dig for gold and attack or defend their opponents.

Background and game material

In the game Vikings Gone Wild , the aim of the player is to be as successful as possible as a clan chief of a Viking clan and thus to collect as many victory points as possible. To get this, you have to build and expand your Viking village, attack the other clans and defend yourself against attacks and complete missions. This is a typical deck building game in which the other players gradually expand their hand of cards and thereby become stronger.

In the basic version, the game material consists of the game instructions:

  • a game board with storage space for the cards and a scoring track,
  • 16 player markers in 8 colors, one large and one small,
  • 25 gold bars,
  • 25 beer barrels,
  • four player boards,
  • 12 parish hall cards,
  • four starter decks with four start cards each,
  • 14 defense cards,
  • 18 unit cards,
  • 52 building cards,
  • 40 cards for Odin's path,
  • 8 end-of-game bonus cards,
  • 12 Divine Favor cards,
  • 20 mission cards,
  • a starting player marker (Thor's hammer), and

Style of play

Game preparation

To prepare for the game, each player receives a player board and two matching player markers. The playing field is placed in the middle of the table and each player places his smaller marker on the starting field of the scoring track, while the larger one is placed on the flag field of his own playing board. The cards required for the game are laid out on the game board. First, all unit cards, defense cards and building cards are sorted by type and placed face up on the corresponding spaces. The cards from “Odin's path” are shuffled and placed face down on the starting field, then the first five cards are turned up and placed face-up next to each other on the fields of the path. The “Divine Favor” cards are shuffled, then three of these cards are drawn randomly for each player and placed face down on the corresponding space, two of the cards are turned up and laid out face up. The end of the game bonus cards are also shuffled and four of the cards are placed on the corresponding spaces, the rest are removed from the game; these cards each define an additional point bonus for settlement at the end of the game. All construction and damage markers, the gold bars and the beer kegs are placed next to the board.

All players now receive three parish hall cards, which they place sorted with level 1 at the top next to their player board. The mission cards are sorted according to victory point value and shuffled separately, then each player receives two mission cards with one victory point, which he puts on his player board, and the remaining mission cards are hidden and placed next to the playing field in ascending order as a draw pile. Finally, each player receives a starting deck consisting of 6 beer cards, 2 gold cards and 2 Viking warrior cards. The deck is shuffled and placed face down on the player board, then each player draws five cards and only picks them up for himself.

Starting with a starting player who receives the starting player marker, the players play in clockwise order. Each round consists of several phases that the players carry out one after the other: the production phase, the draw phase, the action phase, the storage phase and the end of the round. In the first round, the player does not yet have any producing buildings, the production phase is omitted accordingly.

In the production phase, all players receive a beer barrel for each brewery built and a gold bar for each gold factory as resources. These can be used together with the resources in their hand (beer and gold cards) in the action phase. In the drawing phase, each player draws five cards from his hand from the face-down deck; he may draw an additional card for each tavern in his village. Whenever a player has to draw cards but there are not enough cards left, the discard pile is shuffled and becomes a new draw pile.

The draw phase is the most important phase in which players can perform all actions in the game. There are several options that can be carried out in any order and sometimes even twice. The various actions depend on the resources available (gold and beer) and the cards in hand. The following actions can be performed during the action phase:

Exchange resources
At any time during his action phase, a player can exchange two identical resources of one type for a single resource of the other type. Exchanged resources cannot be stored later and must be spent in the turn.
Buy maps and buildings
With the resources, players can buy any number of units, defenses and cards from "Odin's Path" and build buildings as long as they can pay for them. All cards have a purchase price, which shows the cost either in gold as a yellow square or in beer as a brown circle. Purchased units and defense cards as well as cards from "Odin's Path" are placed on the shelf together with the resources spent and cannot be used in the current round. If a card is bought from Odin's path, the cards to the left of this are immediately pushed to the right and the empty space is filled. Building cards are placed immediately in the village, the maximum number of buildings is indicated by the expansion level of the community center and a player may only own a maximum of three buildings of each building type. If a building is laid out, a building chip is placed on it to indicate that this building is not yet active in the current round and may not be attacked.
Unlike the other buildings, the parish hall does not have to be built and is located in the player's village at the beginning. By using gold, the parish hall can be expanded to levels 2 and 3, which increases the building limit of your own village. If a player expands his parish hall to level 3, he also receives 5 victory points, which are scored on the victory point track.
Attack and defense
Attacks on opposing buildings, the undead or the Draco represent an essential part of the actions. In his turn, a player can attack one or more buildings of another player as well as the undead on "Odin's path" and the Draco on the field. To be successful, your attack strength must be at least as high as the defense value of the target. Each unit and each hero in their own hand of cards may only attack one target and a player may only attack one opposing player per round. In addition, no player may be attacked who has already been attacked by another player in the current round, unless all other players have already been attacked by others and the active player could no longer attack anyone.
In order to carry out an attack, the active player must name the target of the attack and name units and hero cards from his hand that will carry out the attack. The attacked player can then play defense cards from their hand to defend an attacked building. If the total attack strength is at least equal to the defense strength, the attack is successful. If the attack is successful, a damage token is placed on the building in question to show that it was successful. A building that has been successful once cannot be attacked a second time. The attacking player receives victory points depending on the number of successful attacks in his game round (1 for a successful attack, 3 for two, 5 for three etc.) as well as additional bonuses, if these are indicated on the attacked building cards. If an attack is unsuccessful, the attacked player receives victory points according to the number of unit and hero cards used for the attack. His defense cards remain on the building and protect it for the rest of the round; the building can be attacked again. If the player successfully defends all of his buildings in the current round, he receives an additional victory point for the complete defense of his village.
In addition to the buildings of the other players, a player can also attack an undead on "Odin's path" or the Draco. A successful attack on an undead brings the player one victory point as well as the reward indicated on the card, a successful attack on Draco brings a resource of your choice.
Missions
The mission cards on the player board show missions that the player can complete during his turn. If he succeeds, he receives the reward and puts the card to one side face down. Once per round a player can pay one gold bar to exchange any mission card on his player board.

In the storage phase , players can store their unused resources, which are on the production facilities or were won through a battle with Draco, in the corresponding storage buildings and move resources between the same storage types. All resources that cannot be stored in spaces in the storage buildings are lost and are returned to the supply. At the end of the round, all players discard the unused cards in hand (or choose cards that they can keep because of a Drakkar ). In addition, all construction and attack markers are removed. The card on the far right on "Odin's Path" is put aside and the Pfard is moved up and filled. Finally, the starting player is passed on to the next player and the new round started.

End of game and settlement

The game ends when a player has reached the predetermined number of victory points. In a game with two players this is 40 and with three or four players it is 30 points. When a player reaches this number of points, the current round is played to the end. The bonus points are then settled according to the four end-of-game bonus cards on display and added to the existing victory points. Bonus cards that are fulfilled by several players are split up. The player with the most victory points is the winner of the game; in the event of a tie, the winner is determined by further randomly drawn bonus cards.

Expenses and reception

Vikings Gone Wild was developed by the French Julien Vergonjeanne and the first edition of the game was realized in 2016 by their publisher Lucky Duck Games via a campaign on kickstarter.com , in which 2,750 supporters contributed a total of 236,949 US $ to implement the project. The graphic designers come from Mateusz Komada . In 2017 the game was published in German by Corax Games, following a successful campaign in the Spieleschmiede der Spiele-Offensive, in Spanish by Last Level and in Polish by Game Factory .

Already in the kickstarter version, by activating several stretch goals, numerous expansion cards and sets were released, which were sent to the supporters together with the base game. After the official release, other official additions and promo cards for the game appeared. Overall, the following additions to the game have appeared:
