The zoo and culture park Bischofswerda (formerly also zoo Bischofswerda , small animal park Bischofswerda and zoo Bischofswerda ) is the zoo of the city Bischofswerda in Saxony . With an area of approx. 0.75 hectares, the zoo is one of the smallest zoos in Germany. The animal population includes around 200 animals in 60 species, mainly domestic animals and native wild animals ( snow owls , pheasants , lynxes ), but also coatis , raccoons , monkeys ( squirrel monkeys ), parakeets , amazons , degus and gerbils . The sequoia tree planted in 1981 is a botanical attraction . In terms of nature conservation, the zoo is working on a project to reintroduce the little owl and is participating in the international breeding program for the Ecuadorian Amazon .
history
On the initiative of Eduard Candrian, Fritz Grafe and the later zoo director Siegfried Nutzsche, the construction of a zoo began in 1957. The first step was to convert an existing solid building into an aquarium house. On August 31, 1957, the facility was opened as the Bischofswerda Small Animal Park .
In 1961, the city of Bischofswerda took over the sponsorship of the zoo, which had previously been implemented under the auspices of the National Development Agency . In April 1964, Siegfried Nutzsche, one of the co-founders, was appointed zoo manager. In the following years the zoo was continuously expanded.
On July 1, 1992, Wilfried Ziller took over the management of the zoo. In 1996 the sponsorship was transferred to the city's own company "Kultur". Mayor Erler acted as zoo manager. In July 2001 the sponsorship changed to the association Lebenshilfe Bischofswerda eV , the new zoo manager was Silvia Berger.
For the 50th anniversary of the zoo, the new bear enclosure was inaugurated on July 22nd, 2007. This is the current high point in the redesign of the zoo to bring the bear theme closer to visitors . After the death of his mother "Olympia" in January 2013, a mate was sought for the last European brown bear "Balu" born in Bischofswerda . With the arrival of the grizzly bear "Jane", two subspecies of the brown bear now live together in one enclosure.
In spring 2009 the construction of the adventure stage with an underground labyrinth began. The stage is available to schools, children's facilities and associations for music, dance, theater and sports performances.
On the occasion of the zoo's 55th anniversary, it was renamed the Bischofswerda zoo and culture park on August 26, 2012 .
Support association
The Tierparkförderverein eV founded in 1994 has set itself the goal of promoting the zoo, supporting nature conservation projects and documenting the development of the Bischofswerda zoo.
