Look into the tunnel

The Tiergartentunnel is an 1468 / 1469 erbauter about 150 m long tunnel through the same ridge next to the castle Blankenheim . The water from the “In der Rhenn” spring flowed through it in an approximately one kilometer-long dike line to the castle. It is noteworthy that hardly any such buildings are known from this time in Europe . The tunnel was built using the Qanat method and has five construction shafts. In order to overcome a depression between the source and the tunnel hole, the section of the route was designed as a pressure line made of wooden pipes. The facility was only rediscovered and exposed in 1997 . The well room was excavated, archaeologically examined and restored in 2001 by the Rhenish Office for Ground Monument Conservation. Parts of the tunnel are accessible. 18 thematic stations in the Blankenheim Urft valley can be reached via the “Tiergarten Tunnel hiking trail” .
