The Table Mountain is a max. 1026 m high plateau in Suriname , in the Sipaliwini district .

location

It lies between the Emma chain and the eastern part of the Wilhelmina Mountains , which, with its immediate surroundings, form a unique landscape in Suriname. The mesa forms an approximately triangular plateau ten-kilometer-long sides and a base of eight kilometers, (m 1026) fro m falls from the east to the west, north to around 500th The almost vertical, steep walls protrude 200 to 500 meters from the surroundings. In the east the East Ridge and in the northwest the North Ridge allow access to the high plateau. The heavily blended hill is drained in the northwest by the Augustus, Geijskes and Lisabach streams. At the edges they form waterfalls with heights of 100 to 200 meters.

Geology and vegetation

Table Mountain is the only Roraima sandstone formation in Suriname. The cool, rainy and windy climate, where the sun breaks through almost only at noon, ensures a fauna that is poor in species and individuals . The vegetation, savannah bush alternating with smaller savannahs, is characterized by clusias , mosses , ferns , orchids and fine thin bamboo species as "grass". There are only a few palm trees and lianas .

Exploration and accessibility

Table Mountain was the first time in 1903 by the Dutch lieutenant AJ van Stockum during Saramacca - Expedition described. Further scientific studies of the area were carried out in 1926 (Stahel and Ijzerman), 1943 and 1958 (Geijskes) and 1945 (Maguire). In addition to the waterway (Saramacca), the mountain can also be reached by small aircraft.

Nature reserve

The mountain has been part of the largest nature reserve in Suriname, the Central Suriname Nature Reserve , since 1998 .
