The Central Suriname Nature Reserve is by far the largest nature reserve in Suriname and one of the most important protected areas ( rainforest ) in South America. The reserve has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000 .

founding

The Central Suriname nature reserve was created in 1998 through the merger of the Raleighvallen nature reserve in the north of the new area (founded in 1961, 780 km²), the Table Mountain nature reserve in the center (founded in 1966, 1490 km²) and the Eilerts-de-Haan Mountains -Nature reserve (founded in 1966, 2200 km²). The reserve covers an area of 1.6 million hectares or 16,000 km², around 10% of the entire territory of Suriname. This area corresponds to the basic area of the federal states of Schleswig-Holstein or Thuringia .

Landscapes, flora and fauna

There is a great diversity of flora and fauna in the area through a great diversity of ecosystems . You can find both deep rainforest and mountain ranges here; with the highest elevation in Suriname, the Julianatop with 1230 meters. The Table Mountain (1026 m), between the Emmakette and the eastern part of the Wilhelminagebirge , is another special point . Here it forms an almost triangular plateau with sides of about 10 km and a base of 8 km, which drops from the southeast (1026 m) to the northwest to 500 m. The large variety of tree species extends to crown roofs between 30 and 50 meters high and the lowlands consist mainly of palm trees. The rainforest floor is covered with fern and fern moss. The Raleighvallen area is characterized by geological formations with waterfalls and some granite island mountains (e.g. the Voltzberg ), which clearly tower above the forest.

The nature reserve is home to animal populations that are typical of the Amazon basin and some of which are threatened worldwide. These include a. the jaguar , the giant armadillo , the giant otter , the tapir , the sloth , as well as many species of monkeys and birds.

The reserve also protects one of the most important river systems, the Coppename .
