Timoci Bavadra

Timoci (Timothy) Uluivuda Bavadra (born September 22, 1934 in Namoi Village, Lautoka ; † November 3, 1989 in Suva , Fiji) was a Fijian politician and briefly Prime Minister in 1989 .

Life

Bavadra, who was a doctor by profession , was chairman of the Fiji Labor Party and on April 13, 1987 succeeded Prime Minister Kamisese Mara, who had been in office since 1970 .

One month later, his coalition government was one on 14 May 1987 coup the military under the leadership of Major General Sitiveni Rabuka overthrew. Rabuka justified the coup on the grounds that it was necessary for peace between the ethnic Fijians and the Indians living in Fiji, and to protect the land rights and political influence of local Fijians. In fact, however, the coup paved the way for some of the worst outbreaks of violence among ethnic groups in Fiji's history . His predecessor, Kamisese Mara, then succeeded him as prime minister.

After his death, Mahendra Chaudhry became the new leader of the Fiji Labor Party in November 1989 .
